Plank 01
Ban Trawl Fishing in Alaska Waters
Bottom trawlers drag through state waters, dump tons of halibut, salmon, and crab
as bycatch, and answer to shareholders thousands of miles away — while
family fishermen absorb the closures. Alston will push a full ban on trawl
fishing inside Alaska's waters and fight to get the state a real seat over what
happens in the waters just beyond them.
Plank 02
A Full, Complete PFD — Every Year, No Excuses
The dividend formula in statute exists for a reason: it's Alaskans' cut of
the resources that belong to all of us. Alston will vote for the full,
statutory PFD, every year, and against every budget gimmick used to
shortchange Alaskans out of what they're owed.
Plank 03
Expose Where Your PFD Really Goes
Year after year, Juneau has treated the dividend like a lever to pull whenever
the budget gets uncomfortable — diverting money meant for Alaskan households
into pet projects and special-interest spending, then calling it fiscal
responsibility. Right now, the only audits of that spending come from the
legislature's own Division of Legislative Audit — the legislature
investigating itself, and predictably finding no wrongdoing. Alston will
create an independent, outside auditing program with no ties to the
legislature, and demand a public, line-by-line accounting of every dollar
redirected from the PFD.
Plank 04
Alaska Isn't Big Tech's Backyard
Data centers don't build communities. They bring in outside operators,
industrialize Alaska's land, and leave a skeleton crew running the servers
while everyone else lives with the fallout. Alston opposes bringing this
industry into Alaska — no permits, no tax breaks, no exceptions.
Plank 05
Ban Flock Safety Cameras and Mass License-Plate Tracking
Networks of automated cameras logging every vehicle that passes, without a
warrant, without a crime, without a conversation with the people being
watched — that's not public safety, it's a surveillance dragnet. Alston will
introduce legislation banning Flock-style ALPR camera networks statewide and
requiring a warrant before Alaskans' movements can be tracked.
Plank 06
Bring Real Childcare to Rural Alaska
In too many rural communities, there's no licensed childcare at all — parents
drive hours, turn down work, or leave the workforce because there's nowhere
to bring their kids. Alston will fight for significant state tax breaks for
childcare workers and childcare facilities, especially in rural and remote
communities, so that providing this service is actually worth doing here.
Plank 07
Build More Homes, Faster
There are more people in Alaska right now than there are places for them to
live — young families get priced out, workers can't find an apartment near
their job, and whole communities stall because there's nowhere new to build.
Alston will push to cut the permitting red tape that stalls housing projects
for years, and back real state incentives for apartment and workforce-housing
development that favor local builders over outside developers.
Plank 08
Get Small Communities Real Mental Health Support
Too many small and village communities have no mental health provider
anywhere nearby — when someone is in crisis, the closest help can be a plane
ride away. Alston will push for state-funded mobile crisis response teams
and expanded telehealth psychiatric care that actually reach village and
small-community clinics, along with real pay and training for the local
behavioral health aides who already know these communities best.
